What are School Based Apprenticeships?
An Australian School Based Apprenticeship (ASBA) allows students to complete an industry accredited apprenticeship or traineeship part-time as part of their secondary school studies. Apprentices and trainees receive wages for the time spent working – usually one day a week at work, with the remainder at school. In this way, ASBAs offer on-the-job training and clear pathways for students to gain skills and industry experience. Australian School Based Apprenticeships are available in most industries.

Information for parents

  • If your son or daughter is undertaking an Australian School Based Apprenticeship, their workplace hours can be completed either during school hours (one day a week), on weekends, school holidays or even after school.
  • Once completed, the traineeship gives the student a nationally accredited qualification that is recognised Australia-wide.
  • Your son or daughter will have work books to complete as part of their training.
  • They will be assessed on the job by a workplace trainer/assessor from a Registered Training Organisation.
  • In some industries, the Certificate II can be progressed into the second year of an individual’s apprenticeship if they take on a full-time role after leaving school.
  • Australian School Based Apprenticeships improve student retention rates. Students tend to stay at school longer as the workplace experience gives them a small break from school and the opportunity to earn a wage. With a clear career path before them, some students also find a renewed sense of purpose in their studies. The students gain valuable experience in the workday world and an appreciation of an employee’s responsibilities.
  • The ASBA can become a subject in their VCAL or VCE, contributing to their final results.

Information for employers

  • There are incentives available to help offset the cost of employing a student in an apprenticeship.
  • Australian School Based Apprenticeships provide employers with an opportunity foster and develop a possible future team member for your business.
