Students to benefit from new Workplace Learning Coordinators Program (media release)

Students in the Glenelg and Southern Grampians regions will benefit from new workplace learning placements in a new $500,000 project.

Westvic Staffing Solutions has won a tender to deliver the Workplace Learning Coordinators Program in the Glenelg Southern Grampians Local Learning and Employment Network Region from July this year.

The project aims to increase the number of students undertaking workplace learning placements, particularly in industries that provide strong vocational outcomes.

It also aims to improve links between vocational education and training and local industry needs and help more Koori students into work placements.

A target of more than 1000 work placements has been set for the project across the two municipalities.

WestVic Staffing Solutions CEO Miles Coverdale said the program would open up many opportunities for young people in the Glenelg and Southern Grampians region. Students will have access to a variety of programs, including work experience placements, structured workplace learning placements and school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.

The coordinators’ role will include liaison with industry and schools, generating work placements, disseminating information, promoting to industry the benefits of workplace learning, and providing a contact point for employers.

Mr Coverdale said the program would give more young people aged 15 to 19 opportunities to improve their skills and workplace knowledge through on-the-job experience.

“In the Glenelg Southern Grampians LLEN region we aim to deliver 466 work experience placements, 536 structured workplace learning placements and 85 school-based apprenticeships and traineeships,” Mr Coverdale said.

Westvic Staffing Solutions will receive $528,664 over the three years of the contract from the Victorian Department of Education and Early Childhood development.

Two additional staff members will be recruited and located in the Hamilton and Portland regions to service schools including Baimbridge College, Balmoral High School, Casterton Secondary College, Good Shepherd College, Hamilton Special Development School, Monivae College, The Hamilton & Alexandra College, Portland Secondary College, Bayview College, Heywood & District Secondary College and Portland Special School, along with TAFE and other service providers.
